Veteran Employee Resource Group

Emerson and our business units seek to provide transition assistance and post-military job opportunities for veterans. Our Veterans Employee Resource Group, made up of eleven official chapters and more than 850 members, is one channel and platform in which we’re better able to do this. You can hear firsthand from our Veterans Employee Resource Group members.

This tight-knit community of employees raises awareness of the value U.S. military veterans bring to our organization. The group is constantly growing its members and impact. We have also launched a new 11-week fellowship program with Hiring Our Heroes, a nationwide effort to connect veterans, service members, and military spouses with meaningful employment opportunities.

In addition, group members regularly participate in veterans-focused MBA recruiting events at the University of Michigan, Northwestern University, Harvard University and Washington University in St. Louis.

Interview Resources

  • Review the Emerson website to learn more about our organization.
  • Translate your unique military background, experience and skills into a strong resume through Resume Engine.
  • Review the job description/posting and note the areas to highlight your applicable experience. Prepare yourself to talk through these examples during the interview by using online skills translators and resources on the United States Department of Veterans Affairs or Real Warriors webpage. These tools will allow you to better explain your responses to any non-military personnel you’re interviewing with.
  • Write down notes on the copies of your resume that you want to highlight during the interview, as well as a few questions you’d like to ask during your interview about either the job or organization.
  • To better prepare yourself for behavior-based interview questions, such as “Tell me about a time you…,” practice answering these prompts ahead of time with a friend or in front of the mirror.
  • If the interview will be conducted via video, test your camera and audio days in advance to ensure requisite time to troubleshoot prior to the interview, if necessary.
  • If the interview is on site, drive to the location the day before to familiarize yourself with the directions.
  • Bring paper and a pen to take notes.
  • Have a copy of your resume. If you’re on site, bring extra copies to hand out. If you’re on video, have an electronic copy ready to attach, share or send, if needed.
  • Ask any questions you have about the position or company culture. Remember, interviews are an opportunity for both sides to find the right fit.
  • Contact your Talent Acquisition Partner to receive the email addresses of those you interviewed with. Write “thank you” emails to them, expressing your interest in the position and appreciation for their time.
