Wireless gas monitoring technology is used to provide an early warning of the presence of toxic gas leading to enhanced personnel safety. A wireless gas monitor uses a gas sensor module to monitor for the presence of toxic gas. The gas sensor module may consist of an electrochemical sensor inside a sensor module installed into the transmitter housing. Electrochemical gas sensors consist of a set of electrodes separated by electrolyte material. When the target gas is present inside the sensor housing, it oxidizes or reduces on the sensing electrode creating an electric signal across the cell which is interpreted by the transmitter and converted into a wireless-enabled signal.
Facility personnel that are unable to remotely monitor for the presence of toxic gas could enter potentially dangerous areas leading to unsafe working conditions. Wireless gas monitors increase worker safety through early gas leak detection in hard-to-reach areas. Examples of challenging, remote applications where wireless gas monitors would be useful include: areas where oil or natural gas is processed, stored, or transported; wastewater treatment facilities; and pulp and paper mills.
An alternative method of monitoring toxic gas in remote locations is the use of portable gas monitors. These personal devices attach to a worker’s clothing and may notify the worker of exposure too late, resulting in symptoms such as serious respiratory system damage, central nervous system effects, or even death.
Another alternative to wireless toxic gas monitors is the use of expensive wired gas monitoring systems. Conventional wired gas monitors in remote locations require high costs of installing wiring and conduit for power and communication.
