Wireless communication takes overfill prevention to new levels

If you are looking for overfill prevention, pump control or just point level detection in difficult to reach areas, then the industry’s first WirelessHART® vibrating fork level detector, the Rosemount 2160, provides the solution.

Enabling level detection in locations previously inaccessible or too costly for wired devices, the Rosemount 2160 combines Emerson’sTM wireless expertise and vibrating fork technology. It has all the features of the wired level switches and provides easy installation.

How It Works

The Rosemount 2160 Wireless Level Detector uses vibrating fork measurement technology. Vibrating fork detectors are designed around the tuning fork principle, consisting of a two-pronged fork which is driven to vibrate (oscillate) at its natural frequency, usually by a piezo-crystal assembly. The frequency of the vibrating fork sensor changes depending on the media in which it is immersed. When in air, the forks vibrate at their natural frequency. When liquid covers the forks, the frequency drops.

Changes to the frequency are continuously monitored by the switch electronics, which then change the switch output state to operate an alarm, pump, or valve. The natural frequency is chosen to avoid interference from normal plant vibration which may cause false switching.

Wireless communication has been around for some time, and in the last couple of years, the technology has been incorporated into the process industry with great success. Wireless communication enables the right information to get to the user when the user needs it. Our wireless field network products are based on the WirelessHART™ standard developed by the HART Communications Foundation. The Emerson™ Wireless network is a self-organizing solution; wireless field instruments send data to a gateway, directly or routed through any of the wireless devices on the network. Multiple communication paths are managed and analyzed in parallel to ensure optimal communication and sustained network reliability even when obstructions are introduced.

The EmersonTM Wireless network solution is designed with security in mind. Interference from other radios, WiFi, and EMC sources is avoided through Time Synchronized Channel Hopping and Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS), which are two different ways to transmit signals over the airwaves. Also, layered security implementing industry standard encryption, authentication, verification, anti-jamming, and key management ensures that data transmissions are secure and received only by the Gateway.

The WirelessHART communication protocol includes built-in security that cannot be disabled, utilization of the Standard AES-128 bit encryption, and a functionality that only lets the final device decrypt and utilize the transmitted data.

You need long battery life coupled with reliable measurements in hard to reach locations. The Rosemount 2160 uses a replaceable, intrinsically safe Lithium-Thionyl Chloride power module with PBT enclosure. The battery can run for up to ten years at a one minute update rate when conditions are 70 °F (21 °C), plus routing data for three additional network devices. To calculate the battery life at you conditions use the Power Module Life Calculator below.

With the Rosemount 2160, you can automate level measurements and increase safety and efficiency quickly and economically, even on vessels in locations that were previously inaccessible or impossible to automate.

The Rosemount 2160 features enhanced diagnostics and wireless technology. The WirelessHART functionality gives you access to far more data compared with a traditional level switch.

Continuous instrument health diagnostics checks the condition of the fork and sensor, detecting internal or external damage, and breakages to internal wiring. Diagnostic data can be viewed locally or transmitted wirelessly.

The “fast drip” fork design draws liquid away from the tips, allowing the Rosemount 2160 to react quickly, and with an adjustable time delay the risk of false switching is virtually eliminated.
